Ahead of the band's biggest headline show to date at Hackney's Moth Club next month, London Wonky Art-Pop Quartet Pushpin share their self-titled sophomore EP - out now (11th October)
Produced by Joe Futak (Tapir!, The Howl and The Hum, Lilo), Pushpin offers the band’s more ambitious collection to date. Defined by relentless musical experimentation, the 6-song set finds home for vocal choirs, hurdy gurdies, avant-garde brass freak-outs, 3 part a capella rounds, dance pop synth choruses, and much else besides
Playful at its core - giant painted cardboard cut-outs of dogs decorate their stages - the EP rounds off a successful 2024 which has included a sell-out at The Lexington in London, 4 sets at Glastonbury, backing from The Line Of Best Fit, Far Out, Hard of Hearing and The Most Radicalist, as well as the fulsome support of John Kennedy, who hosts the band for a Radio X live session in early November.
Offering some words on the EP, the band say: We'd describe this EP as 'organised chaos'. We packed it full of new instruments and sounds, with brass, woodwind, strings, choirs, synths, piano, percussion, and more, and recorded a lot of it in a church in South London. The six songs are theatrical, varied, fun, and sometimes sad, all in equal measure. Listening to the EP is a bit like experiencing all the seasons at once."
Releasing their debut EP Picnic in 2022, the band’s growth has been steady and considerable. Winning airplay from Steve Lamacq (BBC Radio 6Music), and considerable backing from John Kennedy on Radio X (‘Hot One’, live session), the band’s live shows have progressed from regular performances at The Brixton Windmill alongside fellow mainstays Mary In The Junkyard and Fat Dog (the band have played there 32 times in total), to nationwide tour dates, sell-outs at The Shacklewell Arms and The Lexington, with their biggest London headline to date at Hackney’s Moth Club pencilled for this coming November. On the festival front, the band were finalists of Green Man Rising in 2022, performed at the Main Stage at Truck Festival the following year, notably performing 4 sets at this year’s Glastonbury back in June.
