Mumble Tide - a Bristol duo-come-couple who met through Gumtree - have shared details of their forthcoming mini-album ‘Everything Ugly’ along with a new single ‘Good 4 Me’ and an accompanying self-directed video. They’ve also announced a short run of dates this winter.
Out 2nd December, ‘Everything Ugly’ is set to give a front seat view to the self-contained world of Mumble Tide. The duo began when Gina Leonard advertised for a bassist in a Gumtree ad and Ryan Rogers responded; “the boyfriend part was a bonus”, notes Gina. Their scrappy, chaotic sound is the result of the freedom they feel around one another. From the off, they made clear nothing was out of bounds - nothing was too corny, nothing was too cutesy and nothing was too petulant. Aside from the approval of their mascot Furbs The Furby, who incidentally features on the ‘Good 4 Me’ video, Mumble Tide is a judgement free zone.
That wild abandon was showcased in full force on the previous singles taken from ‘Everything Ugly’. ‘Breakfast’ opened with the lyrics “everyone’s an arsehole”, while ‘Sucker’ imagined Gina flicking two fingers up at previous baggage and strutting off into the distance.
Though perhaps a little more introspective, ‘Good 4 Me’ is no different. Composed on a ‘crap casio keyboard’ bought from a dentist on Facebook Marketplace - Gina sure does love a good ad site! - ‘Good 4 Me’ also features sparkly synths, trumpets and, in Gina’s own words, ‘a stupid guitar solo’. It begins with playful drums boomeranging around Gina’s breathless, fast-paced vocal before indulging in a typically no-holes-barred chorus.
Speaking to the track, Gina said: “Good 4 Me’ is one of our favourite songs that we’ve written so far. It fell together late at night during lockdown in our dressing gowns.
“The vocal is more or less the first take we did where I just let it all out. I guess it’s about how the years don’t always bring you the answers you thought they would. It’s kinda sad but there’s also this nostalgia and excitement underneath.”
Mumble Tide’s taste for world building doesn’t end with their self-directed videos, indeed the duo also produce their own songs and design their own artwork. ‘Everything Ugly’ promises to take us on an unplotted course through the madness. With songs this infectious, they’re free to lead us wherever they like.
