Ahead of Autumn festival appearances and a nine date headline UK tour, Sunderland-via-Liverpool Queer Pop artist Mickey Callisto announces debut EP Homospace - due 17th November - and shares sultry, glam-ballad 'Lost In Space'.
Taking cues from the likes of Her's, Mac Demarco, and Pink Floyd's 'Any Colour You Like', 'Lost in Space' offers a luxurious, velvety romance that's fruiting with in-your-face synth-nostalgia and pirouetting, Queen-like vocal prowess. Bringing sentiments of positivity and sexual self-empowerment to celestial proportions, the track sustains Callisto's push for unity, inclusiveness and self-discovery through his music.
"It's about being lost in yourself," Callisto explains, "not being able to find who are, reaching out for someone; trying to find the place that makes you comfortable, because it feels like you're stranded in space..."
Growing up in a working class council estate in Sunderland, and now based in Liverpool, Mickey Spence went to his first warehouse rave in 2019 dressed in a full body ski-suit and hasn't looked back since. Renaming himself after the third biggest moon in our solar system, Callisto - inspired by Arctic Monkeys' Tranquility Base Hotel - dreamed up the concept of a gay club on the moon and called it 'Homospace'.
Described as "A place to escape to find complete freedom and unity", within this endless vacuum of galatical possiblities, Callisto leads us through a glitzy, joyous and eclectic 6-song celebration of the beauty of self-discovery. Whether it's via the 80s Italo-disco of the EP's stomping title track, the sumptuous city-pop stylings of 'Bring Me Down To Earth', or the Pink Floyd inspired loungings of 'Lost In Space', Callisto spares no expense in cultivating these wonderous life-affirming vingettes of sublime escapism."My music is about positivity, bringing people together, beyond the need for labels", he explains," it's about saying "fuck it, we are who we are", and simply celebrating that fact. I'm performing to the misfits at the back of the room, to make them feel as empowered as I do."
With a nine-date headline tour to come at the end of the year alongside appearances at Live at Leeds and Sŵn Festivals, the last 12 months have seen him perform at Green Man, Latitude, The Great Escape, Dot 2 Dot and Get Together, as well as hit the road with Icelandic Eurovision star Daði Freyr. All the while, he's won backing from the likes of Under the Radar, Licks Mag, Liverpool's Museum Sessions and BBC Introducing.
