“ a series of fearless moments that centre on intersectional feminism and reclamation of power, underpinned by a soundtrack of clattering drums and jagged, dissonant guitars.” The Guardian ★★★★
Based in Dublin, Belfast, and London, Irish intersectional feminist band M(h)aol, now a trio — Constance Keane (She/Her), Jamie Hyland (She/Her), and Sean Nolan (He/Him) — have built a reputation for thrilling live performances, fostering an atmosphere that encourages community and catharsis regardless of where they play. Now signed to Merge Records after their outstanding SXSW set, today they share new single ‘Snare’.
“‘Snare’ is about countless conversations I’ve had since my first drum lesson on my ninth birthday about how bizarre it is that I play that instrument, or how I should be doing it differently,” recalls lead vocalist and drummer Constance Keane. “The idea of society gendering an inanimate object like a drum kit, when it’s something that brings me so much joy and release, has always frustrated me hugely, and I thought it was time to sing about it.”
M(h)aol’s acclaimed full-length debut Attachment Styles released last year, received 4* reviews from The Guardian, Louder, as well as support from NME, Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, BBC 6 Music, Matt Wilkinson, The Line Of Best Fit, Rough Trade, CRACK, Hot Press, Loud & Quiet, DORK, DIY, So Young, and loads more. It followed their EP Gender Studies which was released in 2021.
Applying a DIY ethos to all aspects of the band, Attachment Styles and Gender Studies were originally released on TULLE, an independent women-led record label co-founded by Constance. The album was recorded, mixed, mastered, and produced by Jamie Hyland, who is at work mastering M(h)aol’s forthcoming 2025 album.
They also announce U.S. tour dates in New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle for next year, and have shows in London, Wales, Dublin and Belfast before the end of the year.
