“Maruja have begun to etch their name into the looking glass of jazz-infused chaos” - So Young “Phenomenal and definitely one to watch” - God is in the TV |
Ahead of a string of UK and EU tour dates this coming May, Maruja share explosive new single ‘Zeitgeist’ - Creeping out a black hole with an anxious saxophone stutter, the track shatters wildly into the 4th dimension and blasts an earth-scorching thunderclap of break-beat punk and cosmic jazz over its tempestuous 3 minute span. Laden with doom and fearsome cathartic release, ‘Zeitgeist’ stands as the most concise formulation yet of Maruja’s hellish ambitions. The band explains their thoughts on Zeitgeist here: “The energy is reminiscent of acts like Rage Against The Machine and Prodigy. This is the track we open our live sets with and it’s all of us going full pelt for 3 minutes. It’s our most unapologetic, in your face track to date which shocks every listener into paying full attention.” The convergence of vocalist and guitarist Harry Wilkinson, drummer Jacob Hayes, bassist Matt Buonaccorsi and saxophonist Joe Carroll creates the intense, unflinching nuance of Maruja’s call. Longlisted for Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent Competition, Championed by the likes of indie giants NME, So Young, Loud & Quiet, God Is In The TV, Hard of Hearing and Wax Music, the band have seen radio coverage from BBC Radio 6 whilst also amassing over 1 million streams, despite self-releasing all their material. Their debut EP, ‘Knocknarea’, which landed in March, currently ranks as Rate Your Music’s #1 EP of 2023. Establishing themselves as the most breathtakingly turbulent band emerging out of Manchester, it is at their live shows that the full brunt of their menace can be felt. Having already performed at the likes of Left of the Dial and Manchester Psych Fest, securing support slots Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Opus Kink, Talk Show, Honeyglaze, The Lounge Society, L.A. Witch and Enola Gay, Maruja are quickly becoming a serious force to be reckoned with.
