Mandy, Indiana — the Manchester-bred, UK-based quartet composed of vocalist/lyricist Valentine Caulfield, guitarist/producer Scott Fair, synthesist Simon Catling, and drummer Alex Macdougall — present the new single, “Peach Fuzz,” from their highly anticipated debut album, i’ve seen a way, out May 19th on Fire Talk.
“Peach Fuzz” follows previous singles “Injury Detail" and“Pinking Shears". “Peach Fuzz” scrapes club sounds from a beer-soaked floor, a soundworld completed by Caulfield’s lyrics of fury, sung in her native French and translated to English here: “It’s not a revolt, it’s a revolution // They are the winners and we are the losers. // We are told yes, we are told no // They take us for idiots // We’re going around in circles.”
Recorded in caves, crypts and shopping malls, i’ve seen a way is an exquisitely rendered debut, expertly twisting genre to channel the chaos of everyday life. Unlikely off-site recording locations with novel acoustics were crucial to achieving the album’s unique sound. Fair elaborates: “These locations offered something acoustically, but would traditionally be thought of as having the ‘wrong’ characteristics for producing a ‘good’ recording. These spaces imprint on the sound: It’s not about a lack of access to more traditional recording spaces — it’s about us capturing things happening in a specific place at that moment.”
i’ve seen a way draws on a broad sonic palette of experimental noise and industrial electronics, generating a sound that is at once chaotic and precisely tuned. Fair explains, “We wanted to alter textures, create clashes, and craft those moments when what you’re expecting to happen never comes.” Mandy, Indiana manipulates chance recording operations into percussive geometries, one where gnarled guitars sit in thickets of distortion and vocals spin knots of lyrical repetitions. i’ve seen a way is a manifesto for these moments of openness and disruption, with sessions in more controlled studio environments spliced with spontaneously captured lo-fi phone recordings. Though painstakingly crafted, where Mandy, Indiana thrives is the unexpected.
Mandy, Indiana formed out of the fertile Manchester scene and arrives fully-realized. Their first recordings emerged in 2019, culminating in 2021’s acclaimed “...” EP which saw the band draw early cosigns from Daniel Avery, Squid, and Gilla Band, whose own Daniel Fox mixed several of the tracks on i’ve seen a way, alongside Robin Stewart of Giant Swan. Produced by Mandy, Indiana’s Scott Fair, the album boasts mastering credits from indie stalwart Heba Kadry.
