Bristol risers MOULD release second EP ‘Almost Feels Like Purpose’ EP, out today (April 25th) via 5dB Records (anaiis, Ashaine White).
Recorded in summer 2024 at Bristol’s Humm Studios, ‘Almost Feels Like Purpose’ bristles with pent-up frustration, setting frontman Joe Sherrin’s sardonic reflections to a breakneck punk (‘FRANCES’), wiry alt-rock (‘BRACE’) and Weezer-ish indie (‘WHEEZE’, featuring Harry Furniss on cornet). Lead single ‘CHUNKS’ is a riotous mish-mash, its winding, melodic verses, giving away to an unrepentant bludgeon of chorus, all thrashing drums and feral howls.
Taking lyrical inspiration from musical heroes Dave Berman and Nick Cave, MOULD’s musical ability sees them move fluidly between various punk strains, with an almost panicked sense of urgency showcased in their very own unique style.
Achieving sustained support throughout the press community (NME, DIY, Dork, So Young, Clash, The Line Of Best Fit, Rolling Stone UK, Rough Trade, Brooklyn Vegan), as well as repeated spins across the BBC 6 Music (Huw Stephens, Amy Lamé) and Radio X (John Kennedy) airwaves, MOULD are fresh from an acclaimed showcase at NYC’s New Colossus Festival earlier this spring, preceding a slot at The Great Escape Festival next month where they’ll showcase ‘Almost Feels Like Purpose’ in full.
Speaking ahead of their EP release, Sherrin explained: “This EP really felt more than just continuing where we left off. MOULD was an incredible introduction to us believing that our Wednesday-night-noise-catharsis, coupled with copious amounts of voice recordings, could amount to a tangible thing we could hold. ‘Almost Feels Like Purpose’ carries a lot of the same themes; working anything and anywhere we can to allow us our slither of release doing music, but this time with more confidence and focus. A lot of thought and consideration went into this being a cohesive body of work, rather than a random selection of songs.”
