Today, November 10th, British singer-songwriter Luca Firth announces his debut mixtape ‘A Year Of Grace’ and shares the cinematic video for new single ‘Searching’, via Bad Influence Records.
Inspired by Justin Vernon, Phil Elverum & Sharon Van Etten, Luca has used the past year to create a DIY, hands-on-approach to his own brand of indie-folk.
Recorded in isolation whilst by himself in his student halls of a covid-stricken Exeter University, Luca found himself with an abundance of inspiration and a lack of resources, he began to rearrange, record and mix songs he had written in the summer of 2020, inspired by a trip to his grandparents hometown in Italy during the fleeting break in the lockdown. Armed with just a laptop, a microphone and a couple of guitars, and often using furniture as makeshift instruments to conjure up percussive soundscapes.
It’s an effortlessly strong showing across the 8-track debut, showcasing an insightful maturity way beyond his youthful years. Released back in April, opening single ‘Wings’, praised for its “sunny, breezy spring day vibes” (Notion), catapulted Luca into the spotlight, whilst stunning indie-folk gem ‘Dancers’ builds upon Luca’s sound further - gorgeous layered vocals, sparkling acoustic guitar lines and a lo-fi percussive beat make this the perfect track to slow dance to in the sunset.
Latest single ‘Searching’ continues this theme of raw acoustic energy, latching onto a beautifully crafted arrangement of multi-levelled lyricism, supported by a wonderful foundation of ever-progressing instrumentation. And, with 5 pinpoint, expressive tracks yet to come, we’re in for a real treat across the rest of this project.
Luca describes the music as “a sort of autobiographical statement of where I was at that point in time. While writing and recording, I realised I was kind of just at a loss. I was confused and struggling to picture what I was going to do with my life – as so many people were at the time.” Luca’s feelings are sure to resonate with many others in his situation, with a recent study of students in the UK showing that 57% of those who participated reported a worsening in their mental health and wellbeing during the autumn term.“Luca managed to make something beautiful from it” [Notion Magazine]
Born out of uncertain times, 'A Year Of Grace’ remains an optimistic and exciting introduction to Luca Firth, an artist already promising to be one of the most exciting to emerge from the UKs alt-folk scene.
