Glasgow-based electronic shoegaze two-piece Japan Review combine drum machines, synths and fuzzy, reverb-drenched guitar to create experimental poppy soundscapes taking nods from Broadcast, My Bloody Valentine and The Notwist.
‘Kvetch Sounds’, due for release in October 2021 on Reckless Yes, will be their first full length release.
The band was formed as the lo-fo experimental pop project of Adam O’Sullivan exploring fluid pop conventions backed by ambient tape hiss.
With 2015’s ‘Olympiakos’ recorded, mixed and release in a single evening, and 2017’s ‘Sad Dance Music’ recorded straight to cassette, the band evolved with the expansive and ambitious EP ‘JUNO’ which became their first release with ethical and independent label Reckless Yes in early 2019.
Since then the band has continued to evolve in lineup, with multi-instrumentalist Genna Foden joining. Foden’s arrival was quickly followed by the 2019 single ‘On Auto Now’ and a string of noisy live performances. “If Japan Review show as much ambition live as they do on this EP, they’re going to be wowing audiences for a very long time” – Traveller Tunes “hazy lo-fi sensibilities and permeated with experimental yet dreamy nugaze vibes” – Primal Music Blog
