“80s leaning indie with a new wave sheen, Idle Hours tap into the city's gritty post-punk heritage” Clash
"A must listen in these untethered times" Beats Per Minute
Manchester indie risers Idle Hours share debut EP ‘The Fourth Wall’, out today (August 17th).
With quizzical and assuring social commentary, Idle Hours culminates the sense of cruising rhythm with oncoming jagged guitar and melody. Pulled together from four distant English towns, the band’s garage rock sensibilities have already bagged them slots alongside the likes of The Lounge Society, Keg, The Rills and Silverbacks, in addition to several of their own sold-out hometown headline shows.
Marking their first major body of work, ‘The Fourth Wall’ showcases their flexibility and uniqueness in sound and character. Spearheaded by the driving, motorik-infused rhythms of ‘French Disconnection’ and ‘Souvenirs’, to the melodic ‘Made Flesh’, and infectious ‘Televangelist’, the group’s introduction to the indie landscape has certainly generated widespread acclaim (Gigwise, Clash, Beats Per Minute).
Musically inspired by the sounds of Corridor and Omni, ‘French Disconnection’ arrives as the final offering from their new EP. Born out of a common desire to find the door which leads elsewhere, the track flaunts the band’s capabilities in its catchiest form. With cutting riffs, precise drums and powerful harmonies, held together by the anchor of a galvanised-steel bassline, this song is the most dance floor friendly offering from the band to date.
Speaking ahead of their EP release, frontman Jack Waldron explained: “‘The Fourth Wall’ is starting to break. Our debut EP collates four songs inspired by science-fiction novels, religious exploitation, extraterrestrials in theme parks and the desire to escape from reality. Lyrically, a mixture of social observation and fantasy set over a backdrop of fuzzy guitars and a kraut-esque rhythm section. Call it indie-rock, call it post-punk; it’s guitar music”.
Produced by Seanda Mcphail (The Orielles, Doves, Blanketman), Idle Hours’ ‘The Fourth Wall’ (EP) is out now and available on all digital platforms.
