Out today, Brighton jangle-psych quartet Hutch share debut EP 'Smile and Wave' ahead of an upcoming 14-date UK headline tour.
Formed in Brighton by Jack Pritchard (Vocals and guitar), Dan Shepherd (Vocals and guitar), Charlie Bogg (Vocals and bass), Owen Bullock (Vocals and drums) - with Eva Lunny guesting on Harp and Synth (studio only). The band's first major release to date, Smile and Wave EP reclines bedecked in jangly guitars, time-jolting tempo shifts and angelic 4 part vocal harmonies, rosy-eyed harp-twinkles and rapturous psychedelic explorations.
Mingling the lysergic gooiness of The Babe Rainbow and King Gizzard’s Paper-mâché Dream Balloon, the lilting lyricism of Stella Donnelly and the subtly complex wholesomeness of Her’s - it's an EP coated in a joyous glow and refreshing sense of childlike-whimsy; a welcoming escape from reality and a cosy ascent towards radiant paradise
For a band that started off as a soundtrack project for their own Mighty Boosh-inspired cartoon called ' ‘Mark Monsoon and the Children of the Sky' debut EP Smile and Wave ranks rainbows, icy Lakes and getting out of bed as the all-important subject matters of choice. Elaborating on the EP's themes, the band explain:
"The escapism we explore in our music doesn’t necessarily mean that nothing bad ever happens. We just choose to focus on the good things and small moments of peace in a big hectic world. Tracks on this EP like The Bow and Ice on the Lake are classic Hutch in the sense that the subject matter centers around finding euphoria in the natural world around you whether that's admiring the rainbows in the sky or taking an icy trip to a frozen lake. The inspiration for this sort of material is mainly to do with our own interests and hobbies. We like rainbows and lakes, it's really that simple."
Coming off the back of brace of singles - 'The Bow' and 'Ice on The Lake' - in addition to multiple plays on BBC Radio 6Music (New Music Fix), Hutch have gained the whole-hearted backing of the indie press, with So Young, Far Out, Shindig!, Moof, Hard of Hearing, God Is In the TV, Wax, The Indie Scene, When The Horn Blows, The Most Radicalist, Blogotheque all offering their support for the band.
With a mammoth UK Headline tour commencing later this month, the band have barely let up on their prodigious gigging schedule since their live debut in 2021. Following a 13 date EU/UK tour with Gitkin last autumn, Hutch have recently earned support slots with legendary psych bands Love and Os Mutantes, in addition to shows with YĪN YĪN, Do Nothing, Oracle Sisters, Trudy and the Romance, Surprise Chef and Personal Trainer. Performing at this year's The Great Escape, last summer saw them reach the longlist for Glastonbury's Emerging Talent Competition, and hit the billings of Dot to Dot, Victorious and 2000 Trees festivals
