How To Dress Well is Tom Krell, an ever-metamorphosing artist whose work has taken many forms over his now 13 year career. In 2024 Krell is due to release his sixth studio LP.
Krell came on the scene with the critically lauded, lower-than-lo-fi, narco-soporific r&b of 2010's Love Remains; a remaster dropped in '23 (Love Remains (Unworking Remaster)) with a remix LP to boot (What Remains (Remixes) feat. CFCF, Carmen Villain, etc.)
2012's mournful Total Loss is an LP of gauzy sentimental pop that samples György Ligeti's études, Aphrodite's Child, and Forest Swords – and features a full orchestra.
Krell hit a new level of exposure and popularity with his '14 and '16 records, "What Is This Heart?" (Deluxe Edition) and Care , respectively: the surprising capital-P pop music of these LPs shimmers with contributions from CFCF, Kara-Lis Coverdale , and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (as well as Jack Antonoff). "WITH?" and Care represent Krell's experimental vision of "non-populist pop music" – sparking debate about whether or not this is possible.
On 2018's The Anteroom, Krell returned to the intensity and chaotic-meets-angelic psychedelia of his debut. Working closely with Joel Ford, CFCF, and Ben Babbitt, Krell made a heady record of mangled and shredded techno elegies. Tipped for anyone who loves the saccharine-melancholic sounds of Burial or the suicidal-mysticism of Coil, this record is an overlooked stunner.
Krell lives in Los Angeles. In 2022 he completed a PhD in Philosophy.
