sound maker, b. 1999 ⛰️

Hemai is a London-based producer, artist & multi-instrumentalist originally from Birmingham, blending contemporary electronics with influences from downtempo/trip-hop, jazz, soul & IDM. He grew up around jazz culture, taking influence from an array of Japanese & Brazilian jazz & broken-beat artists.

He has released three projects so far—Eyes, Closed EP (2019, Independent), Strange Beauty (2021, Tru Thoughts), & Leisure Trip EP (2022, College Music)—alongside instrumental versions & 10 official remixes/exclusive tracks for artists like Oscar Jerome, Anchorsong, Quinn Oulton, Sly5thAve & more. Hemai also collaborates with artists he loves as a producer and/or mixer, with sessions taking him across the UK and Europe.

As a live performer, with his trio consisting of his brother Sam Hemus on drums & artist FiFi Robo on vocals, he’s played on stages across multiple major UK festivals and venues & hosted a year-long improvisational residency at Hootananny Brixton featuring appearances from friends within the UK's jazz scene. As a DJ, he takes his sets on a journey through broken-beat, downtempo, and jazz/funk-tinged house to listening bars and venues across the UK and Europe.
