city: Los AngelesHana Vu runs the credits on the Romanticism era with Movies, a collection of stripped-back versions, plus the new song “Records.” Released to widespread acclaim in the summer of 2024, the LA-based songwriter’s second LP ached for meaning as a coming-of-age opus, finding fans in Dazed, Teen Vogue, and Pitchfork. The latter wrote, "Vu channels her despondence into such titanic pop and gleaming rock that you don’t feel her pain so much as marvel at the magnificence of its display." Vu brought the songs to various stages throughout the year, including a headlining tour through the US and Europe. With live dates now underway supporting Soccer Mommy, Vu shares Movies, offering a more intimate view of four Romanticism standouts, distilled to their most vital components: lyrics, chords, and her singular voice.
Recorded within the hushed set, in session with producer Sonny DiPerri, the new song “Records” finds Vu on acoustic guitar, underscored in select passes by piano keys. She sings wistfully, “keeping records of all your lines,” wondering where all the time has gone. In this setting and across Movies — from the synth stillness of “Hammer” to the deconstructed anthem, “22” — Vu’s songcraft shines, revealing all the clever turns and poignant arcs at the center of her musical universe.
Vu adds, "I really wanted to capture the feeling the early demos on Romanticism had. No frills, just pure emotion. Really the saddest possible versions of these songs."
