Swedish four-piece Girl Scout are back today with the announcement of their third EP Headache. The new five-track project – their first since the band’s debut & sophomore EPs Real Life Human Garbage and Granny Music last year – features production from Alex Farrar (MJ Lenderman, Snail Mail) and will officially arrive on November 8th, 2024.
The EP’s forthcoming release is previewed by Girl Scout’s brand new single ‘Honey,’ a mammoth power-pop tune that the group has been teasing on-stage recently; both on their summer tour with Alvvays and at their recent headline shows across the UK & Europe.
Lyrically, ‘Honey’ tackles the complex feelings of friendships falling apart, as lead singer Emma Jansson notes:
“Honey is about the bittersweet experience of close friends growing apart, heartache and the inevitability to keep everyone in your life at the same time. The lyrics delve into the complex emotions of frustration, concern, and helplessness while witnessing the imbalance of that relationship. It was originally written as an acoustic number, but we discovered that it was better suited as our interpretation of a 2010s indie rock song.”
“Headache is AAAAAAAAH!!!!!!,” adds Emma about the full project. “THAT feeling. Straight-up hate and frustration. Feeling hurt and feeling funny about people. Feeling funny about life as a whole. Consider our gears ground. (But in a funny way).”
“Honey” marks the second single off of Headache – having been preceded by the ‘90s-alt-rock-inspired ‘I Just Needed You To Know’, which picked up support this past spring from The New York Times, Paste, Consequence, Brooklyn Vegan, Under The Radar, Northern Transmissions, BBC 6Music, BBC Radio One, NME, Dork, The Line of Best Fit and more while landing the band on the cover of Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist. The band will take songs from the upcoming EP on the road once again in early 2025, today announcing a new run of ten UK dates for February:
Comprised of Emma Jansson (guitar, vocals), Per Lindberg (drums), Viktor Spasov (guitar), and Kevin Hamring (bass), Girl Scout originated as a group of friends studying jazz in Stockholm who connected through a shared penchant for the garage rock and brit-pop sounds of the 80s and 90s. Working with producer Ali Chant (Soccer Mommy, Perfume Genius), the group released their debut EP Real Life Human Garbage in February 2023 and quickly followed it up with their symbiotic sophomore EP Granny Music in fall of the same year. Including standout singles like “Weirdo,” “Boy In Blue,” and “All The Time And Everywhere,” the songs that make up both projects capture the daunting feelings, cringe-worthy moments and social encounters that can play on repeat in your head at night — the sort of experiences that feel infinite in the moment, but can be defined by the people you go through them with.
