“Groovy, Hilarious…Each time you listen, you’ll find another hilariously relatable line.” Clunk
Accompanying the announcement of debut album ‘Crisps’ - due November 9th via Breakfast Records (Langkammer) - Bristol/Manchester duo Getdown Services share the funk-laden grooves of ‘Get Down Jamie’.
Having already taken on landlords, shallow shop-local gentrification, and the M5, finally, the combination of Josh Law and Ben Sadler, face the final boss of waking life, Jamie Oliver himself. A regular feature of their live show 'Get Down Jamie' finds the duo wrapping acute social commentary within a comical, biting diatribe - set to the tune of lounge-y psychedelic funk, as Josh Law explains:
“Jamie Oliver is a celebrity that everyone knows but no one really likes. You never meet someone who goes, “Oh I love Jamie Oliver”. I was thinking about this once when I was watching Jamie’s 15 Minute meals.
“The angle of the show is that no one has any time or money to prepare nice food anymore and for some reason millionaire campervan Twat Jamie Oliver is going to help us with that. The meals are quick, easy and healthy dinners for those midweek nights where you just don’t have the time. All you need is a fully equipped professional kitchen and 15 person production team. I had just been sacked and watching cooking shows had sort of taken the role of full time work Jamie Oliver, and anything with his stamp on it, is by far the worst in that world. I became quite genuinely angry with Jamie Oliver for a bit, and I thought that was a funny thing to write about”.
Praised by Clunk and So Young Magazine, the band have gone from strength to strength in 2023, building notoriety on the grassroots circuit with balls-to-the-wall live performances that have seen them play with the likes of Personal Trainer, The Bug Club, Saloon Dion and Public Body, as well numerous festival billings.
Debut album 'Crisps' offers their most definitive statement to date. Weaving apocalpytic disco, proto-punk, new wave, krautrock and electro-dance, and characterised throughout by the duo's impeccable turn of phrase, the 12 song set neatly showcases Getdown Service’s giddying knack for marrying astute social commentary within a boundless quest for drunken joy.
