Sharing the second teaser from upcoming debut album 'Cash Mountain' - due 11th June via Breakfast Records (Getdown Services, Mumble Tide, Langkamer) - Alt-Country/indie project Ead Wood shares reflective new single 'Cohen's Bloomer' - out today (24th April)
Spearheaded by songwriter Ed Soles, Cohen's bloomer continues to plau on the on the introspective themes as motifs that have come to define his work, touching here on the difficulties of aging and ambition. Written in part while Soles’ was labouring at various dead-end jobs, earning minimum wage, it captures the tensions between the ambitions of a life in music, the reality of adult responsibilities, via the conceit of a comparison to the life of Leonard Cohen, as Soles himself says:
"Cohen’s Bloomer is a song that sits with the weight of time, quietly acknowledging the gap between youthful dreams and the way things turn out. It’s about the quiet reckoning of age, the pull of ambition that doesn’t fade, and the recognition that it’s never too late to throw a new stone in the water, even if the ripples don’t reach as far as they once did."
An unwavering fixture of Bristol’s indie scene, over the last half a decade they’ve maintained a prolific output of lauded singles and EPs, notable highlights being last year’s EP ‘A Sparkling Gift’ and double A Side ‘Menu’/’Peace In The Pines’. Other highlights include press backing from CLASH, The Line of Best Fit and Wax Music, performances at Glastonbury, Left of the Dial, Ritual Union, Dot to Dot, not to mention support slots for Surf Curse, The Clientele, Dougie Poole, Oracle Sisters, Siv Jakobsen and Blood Wizard.
More about Ead Wood:
An unwavering fixture of Bristol’s indie scene, Ead Wood debuted as a solo project of songwriter Ed Soles (Langkamer, Gork). Over the last half a decade they’ve maintained a prolific output of lauded singles and EPs, notable highlights being last year’s EP ‘A Sparkling Gift’ and double A Side ‘Menu’/’Peace In The Pines’. Other highlights include performances at Glastonbury, Left of the Dial, Ritual Union, Dot to Dot, not to mention support slots for Surf Curse, The Clientele, Dougie Poole, Oracle Sisters, Siv Jakobsen and Blood Wizard.
Ead Wood have always walked a tightrope between surreal levity and disarming confessionalism. At the drop of a dime, lyrics referencing everything from Home Alone to the absurdity of human skin can turn to sincere reflections on identity, loss and environmental collapse. But the last few years have seen another motif cut through their releases: a steady, unwavering dissatisfaction with modern life. Whether it’s ruminations on range life (‘Peace In The Pines’) or one’s own incomplete identity (‘Who’), songwriter Ed Soles (Langkamer, GORK) has never failed to cast a light on the day-to-day existential struggles of a working artist.
Recorded alongside producer Ben Andrews at Cavendish studios, ‘Cash Mountain’ is also emblematic of Soles’ more ambitious approach to the band’s new material. Originally tracked half a step down before speeding it up during mixing, the studio band improvised a variety of overdubs and harmonies on clarinet, 12 string guitar, whistle, banjo, pedal steel and piano. The result is a dense, but never overpowering arrangement that highlights Sole’s recent growth as both a songwriter and composer. With the Ead Wood project journeying ever deeper into alt-country experimentation, ‘Cash Mountain’ marks out Soles as a subtly original force in the UK independent scene, with plenty of charm and ideas still up their sleeve.
