Ethan P. Flynn returns with “Bad Weather”, the second single to be revealed for his forthcoming debut album Abandon All Hope, out Friday 6 October via Young Recordings. “Bad Weather” is a perfect storm of stripped-back fingerpicked guitar and Ethan’s idiosyncratic voice.
Speaking on the track, Ethan P. Flynn says “The meaning of “Bad Weather” lies in the lyric “Don’t let the bad weather outlive you” - it’s one of the more positive songs on the album and really an encouraging message that any negative feelings of hopelessness are just transitional. The song features a sample from “Vegas Residency”, a track from my Universal Deluge EP, and is a nice reminder of how important that project was in my own journey to making this album.”
Ethan P. Flynn’s debut album was announced in line with the release of the album’s title single and self-directed music video “Abandon All Hope”, starring Ethan and backup vocalist, Ava Gore. “Abandon All Hope” together with “Bad Weather” gives a window into the eclectic productions and intricate storytelling to come on the full album, which features original artwork by prolific New York-based artist Tim Brawner.
Abandon All Hope is a series of enriching tales that explore feelings of longing and losing power to hope in situations of relationships, love, navigating anxiety, and the coming of age in the 21st century. The eight-track record recalls classic songwriters like Neil Young, Randy Newman, Elliott Smith, and Harry Nilsson, resulting in an album we must all hear.
Last week, Ethan P. Flynn announced the launch of his own label, Crude Oil. After collaborating with a host of familiar names including David Byrne, FKA twigs, Vegyn, and Jockstrap, Ethan P. Flynn was inspired to set up his own label to further his collaborative endeavors. Releases on Crude Oil will see Flynn work with some of the UK’s most exciting new talents to create and release music in its purest form. The first single, “25 Meters” from Silver Gore, a newly launched band consisting of Ethan P. Flynn and Ava Gore, is out now.
Ethan P. Flynn will celebrate the release of “Bad Weather” and the launch of Crude Oil with a one-off event at The Betsy Trotwood in London tonight (Wednesday 26 July) from 7 PM. There will be performances from Ethan P. Flynn, Silver Gore, and DJ sets from Drowning Carpets and Skydaddy. Tickets are now on-sale via Dice here.
Abandon All Hope

“Being an artist, being someone who spends time alone, it is hard not to have feelings of paranoia. You need a delusion of grandeur to make anything in the first place, and that feeds into it…Letting go is a strong aspect of this album. I was doing failed perfectionism before trying to sound chaotic while actually being very controlled. This time I was in the studio playing not trying to make things perfect. That’s not what I’m meant for.” So begins the story of Ethan P. Flynn’s debut album Abandon All Hope, which pours twenty-four years' worth of experience into songs that recall 70s greats like Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson while dealing with coming of age, friendship, falling in and out of love, navigating the age of anxiety and aspects of young life in the 21st century. All delivered with an emotional intensity that’s rare in an age when the feeling that all has been said and done draws us toward postmodern, ironic detachment.
