Leeds indie heavyweights English Teacher share breathtaking new effort âSong About Loveâ, out today (Jan 24th - digitally) via cult indie label Speedy Wunderground (SW044).
Marking their first release of what promises to be a formidable twelve months, the groupâs newest cut sees them partner with Speedy boss Dan Carey, as enigmatic bandleader Lily Fontaine explains: âItâs a pop song about doing chores instead of doing someone else, and how even songs with social or political themes that analyse contemporary discourse, rather than lyricism about tired themes like romantic love, still come from a place of love, or lack thereof.
The final record is one of the first takes we did in the studio, thanks to the atmosphere Dan and Speedy create to work in. It was a relief to finally get into the room and discuss our music and music in general; what came out the other end certainly couldnât have happened in another space, with another producer or on another dayâ.
With acclaimed debut EP âPolyawkwardâ spearheading their phenomenal rise in 2022, English Teacher certainly deserve their position at the forefront of the indie landscape. Widespread critical praise from press titans (The Guardian, The Sunday Times, NME, The FADER, DIY, Dork, So Young, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash, Gigwise), and radio tastemakers alike (BBC Radio 1âs Jack Saunders, Gemma Bradley & BBC 6 Musicâs Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne) has already greeted their early releases, in addition to key milestones on the live front, with support slots alongside Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Parquet Courts and Yard Act ticked off throughout the last year, as well as a prestigious opening spot on Glastonburyâs John Peel Stage.
Casting their eye firmly on the future, English Teacher will be hitting the road again next week on their Independent Venue Week UK tour, followed by their first ever trip stateside for SXSW in March.
Produced by Dan Carey, English Teacherâs âSong About Loveâ (single) is out January 24th via Speedy Wunderground and will be available on all digital platforms.
