Born in the rural outskirts of Essex, Echo Juliet dreamed of playing percussion on Later with Jools Holland. After years of classical training and rejections from several music colleges, she couldn't afford to continue and gave up trying to be a professional musician. Instead she fell for the allure of electronic music, but self-confidence was a huge barrier. Her boyfriend bought her some music production software as a surprise, then a producer showed her how to make a whole track and she was hooked.
Now the Birmingham-based artist uses percussion as the defining element of her sound. Owing a debt to Bonobo, Four Tet and Anchorsong, there are also influences from deep house, classical music and broken beat.
Her music has received support from Mixmag, Jazz FM, BBC Introducing and Balamii to name a few, with Jamz Supernova describing her as ‘a future legend’. She has a UK tour under her belt supporting Lara Jones, and has opened for Anchorsong, George FitzGerald and Nightmares On Wax. DJing has taken her around the world with appearances at SXSW in Texas, North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, and UK festivals including We Out Here and Green Man.
Echo Juliet has been an activist for several years, commissioning research on gender representation in music and appearing on BBC Woman’s Hour. She is passionate about opening up the music industry to a wider range of people, so she runs the Future Proof project for Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section Intl label.
