Taking a journey of discovery, ‘tusk’ is the new single from Dorsal, his third, and penultimate, from upcoming album rewilding - his debut on the Yorkshire-based analog horizons label (break_fold, Jessie Marcella, Precept), set to be released in July.
Dorsal (aka Dave Lancaster) has previously had support from BBC Introducing, Reprezent Radio and Amazing Radio alongside features from Pretend Magazine and the Unsigned Guide. rewilding is his first project since October 2020, and hears the artist living between different worlds of music, without ever really fitting into any, forming his own independent identity.
‘tusk’ hears the artist finding the best way to represent themselves. Samples that evoke a raw, cathartic response are weaved amongst more natural sounding instruments like pianos, strings and saxophone (Chloe Hayward & Tom Kettleton) in order to strike the balance between digital and acoustic. This is the realm where Dorsal exists.
Speaking on the project's creation, Dave says: “I think impulsively I felt inspired by the environment around me. The intertwining Yorkshire landscape of natural and industrial scenery led me to a constant collaging of both digital and acoustic timbres. I spent a lot of time on long walks throughout the county and no matter how far into the wilderness you go there’s always a reminder of the industrial heritage of the region, something that filtered into my psyche during the creative process of this record.”
