An electronic textural dreamworld driven by punk sensibilities, ‘temple’ is the new single from Dorsal, his final before the release of his upcoming debut album rewilding - on the Yorkshire-based analog horizons label (break_fold, Jessie Marcella, Precept), releasing 24th November 2023.
Dorsal (aka Dave Lancaster) has previously had support from BBC Introducing, Reprezent Radio and Amazing Radio, alongside features from Pretend Magazine and the Unsigned Guide and this year he played Leeds Jazz Festival and his debut Liverpool show at QUARRY. rewilding is his first project since October 2020, and hears the artist living between different worlds of music, without ever really fitting into any, forming his own independent identity.
The track was originally intended for the post-punk band Eades, but after it was unused Dorsal created a new instrumental with natural and electronic timbres along with a UK garage beat which the lyrics and melody seemed to fit over perfectly. Somehow it still retains those punk sentiments, and is definitely the most direct song from the full album.
Reflecting on the track’s themes, Dave says: “I was definitely thinking about themes of self reflection, mindfulness and humility when writing the words to this song although I never really have any intent before putting any words down. Most of the time it’s really a mystery what a song can be about until months later which even then is just an assumption based on what I put down. I feel like those lyrics make sense to me in that first moment even though I’m not sure why but there just needs to be that instinctive relationship between the words and music.”
