Today, Dog Unit reveal the first two minutes of their debut album, as a taster of things to come in 2024. Concrete Barges on the Banks of the Thames, the album's opening track, whisks listeners downriver from the city centre to its outskirt edgelands, where strange concrete objects wash up on lonely gravel beaches, while in the background the Eurostar speeds through rusting brownfield infrastructure at 200 miles per hour. Concrete Barges on the Banks of the Thames, and the album that follows it, expands on the soundworld of Dog Unit’s previous two critically acclaimed EPs, Turn Right and Right Again (2022) and Barking to Gospel (2020), combining melancholic melody with lush, atmospheric accompaniment. Their unique sound — instrumental music that leans just as heavily on the tune-first, purist pop qualities of Burt Bacharach or the Strokes as much as it does the groove and ambiance of their post-rock forebears like Tortoise or Stereolab — has been championed from the outset by the likes of Steve Lamacq on 6Music and John Kennedy on RadioX, and has drawn a cult following over the course of 2023 via a sold-out year-long residency at Servant Jazz Quarters, where fans were able to hear the band’s album come together in real time. Last night, that residency came to a triumphant close, and the band will play their next and biggest headline show to date at The Lexington on 23rd April 2024. Tickets for that one are on sale now. In the meantime, the two-minute Concrete Barges on the Banks of the Thames sets the tone for the ensuing forty that make up Dog Unit's first album, full of evocative instrumentals and frantic bangers, all earworm melody, nagging groove and transporting atmosphere. Stay tuned for more in '24.
