Felix: “The core of this song came out in about half an hour of writing. I followed the first idea that came through me when I sat down with the guitar. I was carrying a lot of insecurity that felt like it was piling in on me from all angles but this song was an attempt to reshape those feelings into something positive. I wanted to remind myself and all of us in the band how much belief we have in each other and in the truth of what we’re doing together.”

Nottingham indie heavyweights Divorce announce signing to Gravity/EMI and share breathtaking new track ‘Birds’ (watch video here), out now following tonight's BBC 6 Music Steve Lamacq premiere.
Accompanied by news of a full UK tour this November (tickets on sale 10am June 15th), following a run of dates supporting Willie J Healey, the thrilling quartet’s formidable live reputation has certainly attracted plenty of fanfare over the last twelve months - with a slew of supports already ticked off alongside 86TVs, Deadletter, The Lounge Society and TV Priest, in addition to two rapturously received capacity shows at Brighton’s The Great Escape Festival last month (BBC Introducing and So Young Magazine showcases).
Spearheaded by songwriting duo Tiger Cohen-Towell and Felix Mackenzie-Barrow, the band’s acclaimed debut EP ‘Get Mean’ kickstarted their monumental rise in 2022, having earned widespread praise from press titans (The Times, The Independent, The I Paper, DIY, Dork, So Young, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash, Consequence of Sound, Brooklyn Vegan, The Needle Drop, Gigwise, Rough Trade) and radio tastemakers (BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, Gemma Bradley & BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne) in the process.
With an extensive UK festival run this summer, including prestigious slots at the likes of Latitude Festival, End of The Road and Boardmasters, Divorce are certainly primed for bigger stages and bigger audiences, armed with a unique blend of alt-country sensibilities that sets them apart from many of their contemporaries.
Detailing the outfit’s first new material of 2023, co-vocalist/guitarist Felix Mackenzie-Barrow explained: “I was carrying a lot of insecurity that felt like it was piling in on me from all angles but this song was an attempt to reshape those feelings into something positive. I wanted to remind myself and all of us in the band how much belief we have in each other and in the truth of what we’re doing together”.
Discussing the accompanying video, co-vocalist/bassist Tiger Cohen-Towell revealed: “We really wanted to keep this video simple. The song isn’t really about birds at all, but I feel as a metaphor they represent both chaos and hope, so having hyper-realistic bird makeup and business person suits seemed like the logical way to go. Working with Jack Jobling (videographer) was a joy, he has a real knack for understanding our warped humour without too many questions. I think we were satisfied with the very first edit he sent through. The filming was done in one day and prosthetics are pretty gruelling, Felix actually had to drive about with his on and in a bout of road rage began squawking at another driver”.
Produced by Matt Peel (Dream Wife, Eagulls, Pulled Apart By Horses), and mixed by Grammy-nominated producer Catherine Marks (Foals, The Killers, Wolf Alice), Divorce’s ’Birds’ is out now via Gravity/EMI and available on all digital platforms.
Divorce are Tiger Cohen-Towell (Vocals, Bass), Felix Mackenzie-Barrow (Vocals, Electric Guitar), Adam Peter Smith (Electric Guitar) and Kasper Sandstrøm (Drums).
