Initiated during the UK lockdown of 2020, Disco in Sochi is the brainchild of Anglo-French Londoner Alex Allen. Born in Paris, Alex has always been surrounded by music. Having musician/artist parents meant that he was destined to be involved with music and learnt to play drums in his west London bedroom. By 2008, he was playing with the psychobilly outfit Eighteen Nightmares at the Lux, developing a following on the London DIY scene, playing with Slaves, Idles and Queen Kwong. After a brief hiatus he started Big & The Fat using drum triggers, synths and Alex’s debut as lead vocalist. Alex’s interest in guitar pedals and synths emerged then but after three years the band called time and moved in different directions. At this point Alex moved from London to Liverpool, six months later Covid hit the UK. This is when Disco in Sochi was born! With an iPad, amp, a bass and drum machine Alex quickly recorded several brand new songs inside a suitcase stuffed with pillows, creating a tight, claustrophobic sound world. As lockdown lifted, Alex re-worked the demos he’d amassed with Ulrich Schnauss collaborator Mark Peters at Ark studios Liverpool meeting current DiS member Rory Ballantyne. Striking a friendship based on uncannily similar music tastes, Alex and Rory got working at the start of 2021 and many new tracks have sprung forth from this collaboration that are due to be released under the Disco in Sochi banner. Debut Single ‘Die Neu’ was released November 26th 2021.
