city: Los AngelesDay Wave today returns with his new single, “As You Are”, an emotionally turbulent track imbued with lo-fi textures, glistening guitar and Jackson Phillips’ idiosyncratic dreamy vocals. The song, out via Play It Again Sam, follows Day Wave’s 2022 release, Pastlife which featured KennyHoopla and found positive acclaim at Pitchfork, NPR, Paste Magazine, Consequence and more last year.
Speaking about the new track, Phillips says: “It’s about a relationship unravelling, and the moment you realize that neither person is willing to change to make it work. The song took a while to fully come to fruition. I had been playing the chord progression over and over again for months before I actually wrote the song over it.”
The new music is a welcome return from one of dream-pop’s pioneering names and an excellent addition to his swelling body of work which typically explores themes of love, loss, and manoeuvring life in your 30’s. Alongside releasing his own music, the Los Angeles-based artist has become a go-to collaborator for emerging artists including the likes of Sea Lemon, Hana Vu, Saba and Hazel English, the latter of which Day Wave collaborated with on a cover of Interpol’s “PDA” which found enormous success at Sirius XMU.
