Colby Lafayette began as a fictional alter-ego, an LA-residing rockstar always chewing on a match, embodying the dreams of a kid from a small town north of Boston.
He grew up playing in bands with his friends, listening to rock and grunge legends (Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Nirvana), and eventually diving into the genre-bending hip-hop wave of the early 2010s (Odd Future, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar). In his makeshift basement studio, he wrote, produced, and recorded mixtapes, releasing his first at 16-years-old.
Despite excelling in high school, he didn’t even apply to college—instead, he and a friend (choob) moved to LA, inciting a period of personal and artistic development sprinkled with heartbreak, a symbolic broken hard drive, loss, grief, and musical growing pains. After a lifetime of writing from his birth-name, he decided to try from the perspective of the Colby character, fully liberating himself from the weight of his own identity and providing a blank slate to create without limits.
Colby’s journey is now culminating into SO BAD, a 6-track collection of gritty, bass-driven bangers sonically characterized by undeniable hooks, alt-rock influenced production, and nearly tangible energy. Created entirely in quarantine, the songs are thematically tied together by reflection—Colby channels his naive, reckless high-school days, stringing vivid lyrics and nostalgic moments into a cohesive, deeply personal body of work.
