In an age of hyper music consumption, Christian Music take a measured approach. They savour rather than devour their influences, living with records for months at a time. Artists such as The Fat White Family, Beck, Fugazi and Devo are key inspirations – one-of-a-kind acts that make music in their own world with their own philosophies. Their creativity, single-mindedness and dedication to their art is a key inspiration and reflects heavily in Christian Music’s own work. The end result is music which they make ultimately for themselves, and once released is open for anyone to interpret as they like. ‘Once the music is out there it no longer belongs to the band’, frontman Josh Baker says.
Christian Music is built on patience and passion. Primarily the work of 21-year-old Josh Baker, this Stoke-on-Trent band blend punk energy, hardcore spirit, razor sharp grooves, a laser focus and a deeply, thoughtful artistic approach that is set to make waves when their debut EP drops in June 2024. It is white hot energy, pure feeling put on record. This is not music as product, it’s something for people to get behind. In making music away from the glare of the music business, Josh has been able to hone and strip back what he does, ensuring a fat-free discography that is as lean and uncompromising as he can make it.
Working at The Underground, a venue in Stoke, has changed his life. The motivation for working there was to get into gigs for free, and so far, he’s been able to see many new and established bands up close, see what they’re doing, feel close to the energy and clarify his views on the current state of British music. It’s also where Christian Music recently supported friends University on a night of celebration for the local scene, one that galvanised the local community and shone a light on these emerging forces in UK music. The incendiary gig displayed the seeds of a scene developing – a creative hotspot that is going to be much talked over the next few months.
This year the band released their ‘European Tribunal’ EP. It features the singles ‘Marimba-Tragic Death Cult’ and ‘Feed The Monkey’, and it’s six tracks are frenetic and inspired in equal measure. Already they’ve been featured by So Young, DIY, The New Cue, God Is In The TV and Still Listening, whilst they’ve been supported at radio by Steve Lamacq and Jack Saunders. Shows at The Social, Third Man Records, The Windmill and The George Tavern have seen Christian Music bring their unique live show to the capital, and on 30th August they’ll be headlining the Shacklewell Arms.
