city: South LondonBlood Wizard returns to the world with new single ‘The Slip’ out via Moshi Moshi.
A jolting and at times unearthly track, the piece is a bold reintroduction from the Nottingham raised but London based artist and follows the release of his debut LP, Western Spaghetti, which drew wide acclaim and saw Burns play Green Man and End of The Road,‘The Slip’ continues Blood Wizard’s themes of fluidity in both sound and concept. Unlike the folk led charm that saw Burns gain the attention of many, ‘The Slip’ returns with a sound and unpredictability more in keeping with the likes of BC, NR.
And this fluidity is something that has been essential in the process of developing Blood Wizard Burns says “The Slip is about the many ways to react to one situation. I guess it’s about trying to be fluid in life and adapting to change in a way that isn’t destructive. The lyrics, written during the social-distanced summer of 2021, contemplate the state of limbo that we collectively felt as a band. The limitations of working from home at this time without much outside influence led me to lean further into the playful, angular nature of my songwriting that Western Spaghetti only hinted towards. ”
And whilst the lyrics and songwriting on offer indicate a change to the Blood Wizard heard on Western Spaghetti, the emphasis on a distinctive visual aesthetic is something that remains. Because for Burns and his band, the environments that Blood Wizard summons are just as articulately developed as the music itself. “This song always conjured strong imagery for me, so it was important that it had a video to accompany it. Shot on the island of Tenerife it’s a journey of two oddly dressed humanoids rambling through strange, removed worlds with no end in sight. Contrasting the arid and unusual environments with their peculiar poses and actions was done to create a feeling of futility and isolation, much like we had been feeling during the writing of the song itself.”
