In July, Wild Pink announced a new LP, their first for Fire Talk, entitled Dulling The Horns (due out October 4th). The album is Wild Pink's 5th full length, arriving after a long crescendo of acclaim that reached a new peak around the release of the band's last LP, 2022's ILYSM. An album made in the midst of leader John Ross' cancer diagnosis and treatment, that record was Wild Pink's most expansive and experimental, widening the palette of the bands sound and incorporating a vast collection of new genre and production ideas as well as a host of collaborators, including Julien Baker, Yasmin Williams and J. Mascis. On the band's new record they have streamlined things, making an album that applies the lessons of their more expansive records to tighter arrangements built around some of Ross' strongest songwriting to date.
This is in evidence on the band's latest single "Sprinter Brain" which the band are sharing today along with an accompanying video.
“Sprinter Brain” takes its name for a band in-joke — about one particularly stressful sprinter van tour that plagued Ross — but cloaks one of the album’s most touching stories as Ross juxtaposes his anxiety against his wife’s solidarity. Centred around a driving riff that invokes the heartland rock of the band's earlier work, the track ranges towards thundering shoegaze textures before abruptly mellowing during a saxophone-laden ambient bridge, compressing a career's worth of sonic development into its 3 and a half minute run time.
Ross says of the song:
"This song is kind of about learning how to deal with your problems and not catastrophizing. Just trying to be more realistic and objective when times get stressful. It’s one of the faster songs I’ve written in a while and really fun to play live."
