“Gorgeously melodic, motorik pop” The Guardian
“joyous, oddball pop" The Observer
“Wasuremono craft summer ready dream-pop” PASTE Magazine
“a continuously exciting and distinctive group” The Line of Best Fit
“They’ve got a real warmth and purpose to their song writing” Steve Lamacq, BBC 6 Music
Wiltshire quartet Wasuremono release new album ‘Let’s Talk, Pt. 2’ today. It’s the second half of an ambitious double record, initiated with the release of ‘Pt. 1’ earlier this year via The Wilderness Records, and acclaimed by The Observer, PASTE and The Line of Best Fit; as well being BBC 6 Music’s album of the day.
Matching dream-pop production with indie-pop sensibilities, Wasuremono marry childlike wonder with sophisticated musical and emotional depth. Over this sonic backdrop, they explore consistent and thoughtful themes. This is lead by feelings of catharsis via primary coloured escapism, and knowing, therapeutic fun. All whilst never dodging the realities around mental health conversation, as exemplified by the titular imperative of the ‘Let’s Talk’ twin package.
Going the split album route wasn’t always the plan, with the confusion of our current time being turned towards a positive, as songwriter William Southward goes on to explain:
“With all the delays to tours and release plans due to COVID-19, I spent a lot more time writing new material. That’s where the decision to put out a double album came about. Both parts will be album length”
William operates out of his musical shed, and it’s a thoroughly exploratory process. He is constantly tinkering, and adding different elements and instruments to the vibrant sonic stew, and the resultant collection of 10 tracks bears this aural investigation out.
Opening track ‘Hi!’ is a great initiation into Wasuremono’s quintessentially quirky world. Follow-up ‘Fill Your Lungs’ offers a more morose side, before ‘Eating Up The Sky’ and ‘The Florist’ offer capital P pop-stomp. ‘It Grows’ is an ambient punctuation moment. ‘Don’t Stop’ and album closer ‘Happy Lunacy’ are where the energy reaches its manic maximum. And the late album run from ‘Beautiful People’ and 'Thunder’ to ‘ The Bitter Ending’ paint a picture of an outfit fully in control of their art.
Falling into a similar space to The Flaming Lips, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Barrie, Girl Ray and The Undercover Dream Lovers in their addictive LoFi pop, Wasuremono’s messages and sounds have had particular resonance. This has created a cult fan following, as well as opening doors at key cultural gate-keepers. Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne and Tom Robinson at BBC 6 Music have been key champions, with spins also coming in from Radio 1 and Apple Music 1. The likes of The Guardian, The Observer, PASTE, The Line of Best Fit, DORK Magazine and Louder Than War at press have been singing their praises.
On the live side, support slots with the iconic Flaming Lips and Phosphorescent have seen the band take in legendary London venues the Shepherd’s Bush Empire and KOKO.
Wasuremono are William Southward, Madelaine Ryan, Phoebe Phillips and Isaac Phillips.
