London-based post-punk trio Veranda Liv have returned with new single 'Mammoth', their first release since last year's debut track 'Your Life in the City'.

|
Having initially formed in Finland where founding members Tristan Petsola and Miguel Nyberg originate from, they relocated to Montreal and recruited additional members including bassist Tom Gould (formerly of Pottery) before 'bureaucratic mishaps' forced them to depart Canadian soil.

Now just consisting of the aforementioned trio and fully settled in the UK capital, Veranda Liv have spent the past couple of years making up for time lost to migration through playing numerous shows across the country and finally getting around to releasing music.

This latest effort from the band continues where 'Your Life in the City' left off, with knotty guitar lines and a sense of propulsive urgency about its rhythmic components. These trademarks of the band have earned them many positive comparisons to some of their former contemporaries and precursors in Canada such as Ought and Women, as well as other acts to have recently emerged from their current base such as shame and Ulrika Spacek.

Speaking about the themes behind the track, Petsola says that 'Mammoth' is "a love song influenced by an Italo Calvino short story. It explores the feeling of semantic satiation and subsequent new ways of relating to desires. It covers themes of liberation from and fear of releasing yourself from how one thinks one should feel".

|
Given they still hold onto their Canadian connections, the track was put together as something of a trans-Atlantic effort, with production and mixing handled by both Valentin Ignat (Corridor, Helena Deland) and Seth Evans (black midi, HMLTD) on both sides of the pond.

|
Veranda Liv are no strangers to inviting in additional collaborators both in the studio and for their live performances. Drummer John Talbot joined the trio for the recording of 'Mammoth', and a varied cast of additional guest performers have graced the stage with them in the past, including members of Ought, Yung, HMLTD and Katy J Pearson's live band.

Recently, the band have enjoyed a number of high-profile shows alongside the likes of Cola, Peel Dream Magazine, and Shopping, as well as being chosen to perform at a showcase at The Shacklewell Arms curated by Wide Awake Festival.
