“Angular off kilter guitar pop with a surreal streak” CLASH
Leeds five-piece The Golden Age of TV make a destructive, triumphant return with new single ‘What I’ve Been Through’ today. It’s a further illustration of the spiky art-rock sound the band have hewn from traditions set by The Strokes, Bombay Bicycle Club or Wolf Alice, and honed with their own playful musical outlook.
An urgent, pounding beat, searing guitars and relentless bass propel the track - each element laced with a paranoia teetering on the edge of boiling over. On top of this controlled cacophony Bea Fletcher delivers an empowering tirade inspired by internal conflict and external expression:
“What I’ve Been Through is a statement, of sorts, from the perspective of someone who’s experienced sexual violence. Certain situations can trigger angry, defensive reactions, which for others may seem over-the-top. It’s my honest outburst, explaining and releasing those feelings of rage. A song asking for nothing more than to be heard and believed.
“To put it simply I’ve seen that look before.” If you know, you know. “
It’s accompanied by a zany video, which exemplifies the quirky joie de vivre the quintet instil into their work. As they explain:
“The lyrics are written as a fictional scenario in which a victim becomes violent towards their perpetrator. We imagined it as a verbal statement given to a noir detective which played into the idea for the video being a fun ‘on the run’ car chase.”
So far their striking sound has seen acclaim from key UK tastemakers in DIY, Clash, The Line of Best Fit and DORK Magazine as well as spins on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music, as well as a set at Reading and Leeds.
The Golden Age of TV are Bea Fletcher - Vocals, Ryan Bird - Guitar, Sam Carty - Guitar, Ciaran Scanlon - Bass and Josh Ketch - Drums.
