“You kids have it so easy”, is a slogan as old as time. Young and old folks seem always at odds with how ripe the world is for the picking: the former stating the difficulty of simply finding work, the latter chalking thing up to lack of effort and prescribing the bootstraps rhetoric. However, it still remains that a dollar today is a Weimar Deutschmark to that of decades before. The constant being, as the status quo remains, future generations will contend with harder and harder odds.
Ouroboros is a song by which I tried to come to terms with this grim trend as a fresh college graduate just trying to get by. Boomers could pay their way through college by working at McDonalds, but how could Generation X do the same with the Dot Com bubble? Millennials had the housing crisis and Occupy, but Gen Z is faced with the the greatest income disparity to date and price hikes which may surpass that of the Great Inflation of the 70s and early 80s.
There will always be a problem, and there will always be a retort. It’s cyclical, much like the ouroboros symbol, a serpent eating it’s own tail. Through this song I wanted to put things into relative perspective, as hard as it is for me right now to contend I cannot image how difficult it will be for current grade school kids in the next decade. This song is for them. For them to break the cycle and quell that divisive ouroboros.
