(1st March) London-based singer, songwriter and producer Scout today releases their enchanting debut EP 'Everything Will Make Sense' via London tastemaker label Sweat Entertainment (Dolores Forever, kid apollo).
Hamburg born, Sweden raised and now firmly London based - having moved to the capital at the age of 17, Scout held the core of this first body of work close to their chest for a number of years. It was in the summer of 2023 however when Scout would open up their sonic world through a period collaboration with producers and mixers including Gethin Pearson (Charli XCX, Orla Gartland), George Glew (Emie Nathan) and Oliver Wright (Hot Chip, Ashnikko, Anna Of The North) to make 'Everything Will Make Sense', make the most sense.
The EP is led by rousing new single "Last Time". A synth-driven cut musing on the breakdown of a relationship, the push and pull of reverb drenched guitars and its propulsive rhythms are met with Scout's poignant, defiant prose–"Found a different kind of place / Forced you off my mind"]
"A sibling track to 'Hurt' from the EP, 'Last Time' talks about the same relationship breakdown but from the perspective of remembering rather than being in the midst of it", Scout explains. "I tend to do this with more upbeat, driving songs a lot - I think they just lend themselves to "setting the scene and playing out like a film" really well. It also has that vibe of young love and feeling things very strongly. There's something really beautiful in how strongly things can be felt at both ends of the spectrum."
Raw from tumultuous experiences in the music industry with previous musical endeavours, this new chapter hones in on Scout's ideals not only for themselves but for society, going further to reflect on their own wrestlings with femininity, societal expectations and the power found in telling your own story - with their creations continuously evolving as they dive deeper into their psyche and the world around them.
The project condenses a period of personal turmoil into a body of work spanning an eclectic range of influences, featuring the previously released singles "Who" and "The Best". Through their cathartic lens and alternative-leaning pop soundscapes, Scout aims to be to a beacon of defiance and their own biggest champion by knowing their own worth and their power as an artist.
Speaking more on the release of the EP, Scout said: “The recurring theme is trying to make sense of what's happened and regaining a sense of self. A lot on this EP is about looking back with a bit more perspective, something you couldnt access in the eye of things."
Elsewhere on the EP track list, "Hurt" sees them questioning the world and the relationships surrounding them, with Scout noting "Hurt is about a breakdown in communication between people leading to the premature death of a relationship ands lots of what ifs."
The EP closes in magisterial fashion, perhaps a hint of where their project is headed, on the spiralling "Gemini Baby". Traversing glitch-pop and synth-heavy electro-pop, Scout ponders over their generation's actual disconnectedness, despite the our pre-conceived ideals over modern relationships and hyper-connectivity.
"It has a bit of an apocalyptic feel compared to the rest", Scout says of "Gemini Baby". "I think one of the recurring themes in my personal life is my attention span or lack thereof, and that of my friends and colleagues. We’re all very online, very fickle - everything is always shifting, shifting, shifting - and looking around I feel more disconnected than ever needing to make sense of things. So I go online and I’m bombarded with ways to make sense of the world but the reality is I can’t stick with one thing for long enough because I get bored and the most dangerous part of it is that unless I have the clarity of mind to stop for a second, I never have to be still enough to identify the underlying feeling."
Scout's debut EP 'Everything Will Make Sense' is out now, released 1st March via Sweat Entertainment.
