The piano recording is often natural but sometimes manipulated and stitched together to create a slightly broken sounding sequence. I find this unusual because in the beginning it’s almost falling apart as there is very little structure and only the faintest hint of melody pushing forward. Yet, somehow I always went back to it over the years and I ended up developing it into what became a strangely beautiful composition.
There is a lot of emphasis on space and stillness in this piece, which I find very difficult to create as it’s easy in an era of mass equipment/tools/things to want for the music to be bigger and more layered. Against that this piece can seem simultaneously weak but also very strong in contrast.
I am a fan of substituting known sounds for others, for example there is a strange lead sound that is a synth which sounds like a combination of strings and flutes. Later an actual Cello is heard (played by Anne Müller) when I realised the piece needed to reach a moment of clarity, before it erupts into a darker, energised section.” – Ryan Lee West
