“It’s hard to put Rainyday Rainbow’s sound into words. It’s an enthralling, other-worldly blend of psychedelic rock, garage rock and a dozen other genres.” - Jacob, Nerve Endings Zine
Rainyday Rainbow continue their DIY journey forward by releasing the ‘Masters Of The Cosmos!’ Mini-LP on 1st January 2024 via a cosmic array of digital platforms including Spotify and Bandcamp (LINK TBC). This album takes the raw edged material from their Bandcamp exclusive live debut ‘Live At Porters’ and polishes both the performance and production to bring the songs forth like a flute charming a serpent that has shed its skin. The clarity brung to the lyrics allows the vocals to present more evocative emotion through their cocktail of barking and beguiling tones, like a tiger seducing its prey before attacking in onslaught with the gang of other instruments. Drums crash like lightning, bass rumbles like thunder, and guitars interweave and combine like seawaves on earthquake wrought tides. If you’re familiar with acid jams from the 60’s such as Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead, or mega mammoths such as King Gizzard, The Melvins and Ty Segall, or even graciously glam sounds such as Ziggy era Bowie… Imagine that but slotted together like a jigsaw puzzle made out of tree pines and then glued together by someone under the influence of mescaline.
The recording process allowed for self evaluation of identity; even down to the individuals within the band. Ed who now goes as Egg and explains; “We’ve been trying to figure out what kind of band we are, and part of that was brought about with how we wanted to present these songs. Like a chef cooking a meal, we had to decide what spices and ingredients to add, and in what order. Rainyday Rainbow is the culmination of each member contributing their favourite spices, adding more balance to the flavours, but unsure of the meal we’ve created.”
That’s not to say the cleaner production has left the chaotic songwriting behind; if anything it’s enhanced it! As Tom Emlyn explains; “It’s a contrast with what we do, nice sounding studio stuff that brings the songs to life. The lyrics are truly exceptional! It’s music without limitations; A wild fantasy ride to the other side, a circus trip into the colours of your mind.”
Key to the EP’s production were band members Osian and Evan, both learned students in production engineering through DBS Bristol. As Evan puts it “It’s not like anything else I've produced before, it was quite a challenge turning such a chaotic live recording into something more polished. I think it successfully captures the transitional period the band went through just before I became a member and it metamorphasised into a different creature. It's condensed chaos intertwined with soaring guitar melodies and powerful vocals, all brought together with delays and saturation.”
As he further went on, it transpired there was an additional ingredient to the recording process.
“When we were doing the overdub sessions, just vocals, Egg came in with a hangover and a weirder outlook on life than usual. Turns out he had taken a few wavy babies from the mushroom kingdom, and as a result was really throwing himself into this other world that had been created by the music. The sounds from his throat were half-Elvis, half otherworldly.”
Rainyday Rainbow continues to embrace adventure as they manipulate a Portastudio 424 to sprinkle their sound with an extra touch of magic.
“We’re continuing the use of tape with this Mini-LP; it’s a key part of our sound I feel as it allows for some playful experimentation out of the box, as well as a bit of glue and girth to the music!”
The EP mixed up in a vat in the basement of Rainyday Rainbow's collective subconscious; ‘Masters Of The Cosmos!’ releases 1st January 2024 via all digital platforms.
