Onsloow burst onto the Norwegian indie scene in 2022 with their self-titled debut album. They quickly transitioned from obscurity to performing concerts across the country, garnering rave reviews, playing at festivals, and receiving increasing radio play with each new single. A new Norwegian indie star was born!
However, as is the case for many passionate amateurs with families and day jobs, this couldn’t last indefinitely. Vocalist Johanne Rimul became busy with her master’s degree and growing family, Mathias Nylenna returned to his regular job at national radio, and drummer Morten Samdal and bassist Lasse Berg pursued their own musical projects.
But Onsloow wasn’t finished. They soon returned to their practice space in Trondheim, working tirelessly on new songs for over two years. The result is their second album, aptly named Full Speed Anywhere Else.
In anticipation of the album, the band has released three singles. Taxi was embraced by the reputable and influential Stereogum and was named their "Song of the Week"! It was also listed on national radio at NRK P13 and received coverage in several esteemed music magazines. The follow-up singles, Brakes and Body Parts, have also been mentioned by Stereogum, NRK, Our Culture, Idioteq, Small Albums, Flood Magazine, and Brooklyn Vegan.
With Johanne’s commitments making further band activity impossible, Onsloow had to search for someone who could continue the band's signature sound—distinctive, melodic female vocals atop jangly pop guitars and driving drums. Fortunately, the search was over even before it started!
Helene Brunæs, frontwoman of the emo/pop-punk sensation Lille Venn, jumped on board without hesitation. Despite her busy schedule with regular releases, a US tour, and gigs alongside pop stars like Sigrid, she found time to join Onsloow's ambitious plans. Her warm and airy vocals are a perfect match for Onsloow's universe of catchy power pop, quirky indie, energetic pop-punk, and post-rock crescendos. The new album even features hints of country and Americana!
Through several studio sessions with producer Marius Ergo at Taakeheimen, Full Speed Anywhere Else took shape, with the band focusing more on details and arrangements than ever before. The goal was always to elevate their music beyond the debut. The album’s ten meticulously crafted tracks form a cohesive unit, allowing the band to explore various directions, moods, and expressions without losing their essence: straightforward, catchy power pop that sticks, with plenty of nuances for those who appreciate the finer points.
When the American label Tiny Engines heard the tracks, it was practically a done deal—this was a perfect match! Since 2008, Tiny Engines has been a leading label in the American indie, punk, and emo scenes, with bands like The Hotelier, Tigers Jaw, Wild Pink, Mannequin Pussy, and Illuminati Hotties in their catalogue. Onsloow couldn't be more happy with their teammates. This is a significant milestone for a band that started out in a basement in Trondheim!
Onsloow also enlisted a talented group of friends to contribute to the album, including pop mastermind Truls on vocals, drummer Eirik Kirkemyr (Dråpe, Flight Mode), Gjermund Jappeé on lap steel (Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson, The Formative Years), Ivar Bowitz (Cold Mailman) on synth/keys, and multi-instrumentalist and producer Marius Ergo on guitars and synth.
