Only Rainyday Rainbow re-releases their debut LP ‘The Brain Thunk When It Thailed’ March 31st 2022 via Distrokid. This psychoactive chemical of an album will twist the notion of how music is meant to be experienced on its head with its time-stretching lo-fi production. With an Introlude, Interlude, and Outerlude baked into the album, the listener has time to prepare but they still won’t be quite ready enough for the off-the-rails panoramic, bass bouncing, guitar scrambled sounds. To quote it from the rainbows elbow, Only Rainyday Rainbow themself says; “This album is designed to be a headphone experience that will take your brain and shake it until it drops. Lyrically I wanted to express ambition, transformation, and ultimately lessons learnt. Perhaps not in that order though, and the cycle will always continue. The album has a hidden (or perhaps not so hidden) easter egg that ties into this theme, as well as just being a thing that I thought would be rad to do! I aimed to create something that ultimately would be a unique, and twisty-turny journey, and I’m proud to say that I have undoubtably achieved that.” The songs throughout the album are connected via a loose loop of a thread, with the general sound being heavily saturated; even during the “poppier” moments. “I decided during the production of this album that I wanted to step away from any sort of computer software as much as possible, with the reigning replacement being a hefty Portastudio 424 mkII fuelled by the lower fidelity Type 1 Tapes that are more commonly available. The grit that they gave off was something I leaned heavily towards in more ways than one, and the tactile nature of the Portastudio made it very fun to use; especially the pitch wheel and panning knobs!” Only Rainyday Rainbow has recently put together a groovy gang of noisemakers, The Magical Radicals to make their live performances of the songs found on this album more feasible. Debuting this outfit and some of these songs is a gig happening in Swansea’s Hangar 18 on April 7th, before a Forté promoted gig happens in Cardiff’s Porters on May 11th. Event links for both can be found here and here respectively. Swansea based Only Rainyday Rainbow adventures into sonic territory both charted and uncharted, mixing and moulding their own completely bombastic sound in the process. Drawing from the magical well of water that lies within the 60’s decade, there are tinges of Syd Barrett, Jimi Hendrix, and Pretty Things in the lysergic sound, just to name a few possible inspirations. As of writing, the rainbow wizard produces and mixes their ear potion on their own, whilst creating a multimedia hub by utilising multiple artists worldwide for their album artwork, and music videos; namely the 3 songs Introlude, At The Table, and The Brain Thunk When It Thailed. In 2022 they were picked as part of the PRS backed and government granted Forté project in order to be developed and grown into a pastelcoloured, creative beast. Only Rainyday Rainbow also played a covert part within another band called These Thrilling Lies, when they backed and supported the 90’s superstars Space on their 2021 UK tour.
