Announcing news of sophomore EP Come Into The Garden - due for release on 6th March - and a brace of special launch shows in London and Leeds - Yorkshire lo-fi folk artist Natalie Wildgoose shares the fragile power of new single ‘Angel’- out today (6th February).
Recalling the spectral crackles of Molly Drake, or the heart-wrenching intimacies of Josephine Foster and Clara Mann, Natalie Wildgoose’s ghostly take on folk tradition carries the powerful, rarefied qualities of an unearthed archive recording, so much so that you can almost blow the the dust from it.
Writing and recording on various pianos across the Yorkshire Dales using her grandfather's old reel-to-reel tape recorder, Natalie’s work seeks to uncover the past; to reconnect with and capture the environments of the places and people that hold her.
The follow-up to November’s release of the EP’s title track - which drew phrase from Far Out, The Most Radicalist, and BBC Introducing - latest teaser ‘Angel’ continues Natalie’s delicate and warmly fantastical contemplations of love and memory.
Discussing the track, Natalie says "This song was written in the heart of winter in North Yorkshire. I was alone in the village hall, playing on the WI choir piano, surrounded by a heavy silence. The freezing room pushed me to play for as long as my fingers could endure.
The journey home was surreal—thick white tracks crisscrossed the road, blending snow with patches of black ice, making it hard to tell one from the other. Then, as if on cue, a gust of wind swept the clouds aside, revealing bright blue sky overhead.
The speed limit read 60 mph, but I went half that, choosing care over haste. In that stillness, I realised how good it felt to move through life more slowly, to stop chasing time. This song carries that feeling—a hope to bring comfort to those navigating the fast pace of such a busy world”
