Hallo and welcome to Hashbrandnew's BEHIND THE MUSIC: Exclusive Interviews With Your Next Favourite New Bands! Today you get acquainted with LIBBY QUINN.
Libby Quinn are a five-piece band from Long Island. Although they have roots in post-punk, their high-energy genre bending compositions defy easy classification. The distinct personalities of its five members blend together and create a sound that transcends the sum of its parts. Their fiery arrangements and live performances shape-shift between blunt chaos and orchestrated beauty. Libby Quinn are an experience that stands out.
We’re from Long Island, New York. All of us are from there except for Mario, who’s from Macao. Josh and I (Tyler) started the band a few years ago, mainly just recording stuff with friends we knew from school. Then in September 2021, the current line-up came together and that’s really the second birthday of the band. We make the musical equivalent of a dog with the zoomies.
Tim got lost in the Albuquerque desert looking for Breaking Bad locations. Desperate for food and water, he ate a plant root that wound up having hallucinogenic properties. Thoroughly tripping balls, he stumbled on the home of a hermit who’d lived off the grid for decades. The hermit saw Tim’s condition and made him sit in front of a dusty old TV to watch a movie called The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies. Lo and behold, the name of the composer for that movie was Libby Quinn. Tim was so moved by the power of that name that he ran all the way across the country back to Long Island, knowing intrinsically where to go, and told us he found a name for the band.
Josh Boucicaut (vocals and sax): has a very welcoming smile. Tyler Baron (guitar): has lots of thoughts on things. Stephen Salerno (drums): has mean grooves and an even meaner stomach. Mario Hoi (bass): possesses wide-reaching secret skills that the rest of us are still discovering. Tim Matishek (guitar and piano): does incredible impressions.
We’d love to do some international tours and play some cool festivals. I think if we can share this music with a bunch of people and have the freedom to do whatever weird shit we want, that’d be ideal.
‘Bob’ is our first release with this lineup of the band. It’s fitting because this was also the first song we wrote together as a unit, and I think it’s informed a lot of our process since then. At this point, we’ve played it who knows how many times, and it definitely feels like part of our DNA now.
A lot of dub, Sufjan Stevens, Natalia Lafourcade and Rxk Nephew.
Getting to play Nublu was a big deal for us. So many musicians we look up to have played there, and some of us have sat in with the bands there and learned so much. It was super validating to play there and have a great show.
To get the nerves out right before we perform we would huddle around in a circle and say this Buddhist mantra in unison that Tyler taught us (Nam-myoho-renge-kyo). It’s very calming. Also when Steve was young he’d put his finger tips in his nose and take a deep breath as a way to calm himself down. We all tried it once at our first rehearsal and it ended up being a tradition.
After a show, our only mission is getting food- preferably deli sandwiches or tacos.
Q: Let’s just fucking do it. Can we do it?
A: …
Our clothes are made by Isaboko, their IG is @isaboko_
More music! Our next single is already recording and will be coming out soon. After that, we wanna start touring and bringing the madness to more people outside of New York.
