city: New YorkHelenor shares new single ‘Bad2’.
“This is a soundtrack for pretending you have the ability to be present” DiAngelis says of the new single. “Bad2 is a ball and a chain and a weighted walk through a vitamin D soaked summer day.”
Floaty and full of texture, the new single carries the heft of its own subject while still managing to sound completely weightless in its production. Acoustic guitars and a thick beat shuffle alongside a sea of shifting synthesizers. Written and recorded almost entirely in his bedroom, DiAngelis later brought the song to Vishal Nayak (Nick Hakim, Empress Of) to complete the sentence on drums.
The much-anticipated release is Helenor’s 2nd offering since their DIY debut LP Something Twice. Since then, frontman and songwriter David DiAngelis experienced a mid-pandemic move from his home state of Massachusetts to Brooklyn, and expanded from a one-man bedroom pop project to a full band operation while sticking true to his DIY production roots. Helenor’s sound has expanded too, featuring multiple voices and collaborators as well as a more refined production style. Prominent lead guitars shine, while Helenor’s recognizable guitar-meets-synthesizer bedrock and lyric poetry reminds one of floating in a cool body of water along the side of a highway.
