Hamish Hawk's new album "Angel Numbers" is out today on Post Electric.
To celebrate Hamish is sharing the video to "Rest & Veneers", a collaboration between himself and American songwriter Samantha Crain, and another highlight from his latest and greatest LP yet.
"Rest & Veneers" is a tender song, one with echoes of the Laurel Canyon sound, with Hamish having the following to say about the themes behind the song:
"Rest & Veneers is a love song, in the softer, quieter sense of the phrase. It doesn't deal in high romance, in grand gestures, or the movements of celestial bodies. It's about the everyday kind of love and affection that shows itself in those small kindnesses, those spared thoughts and graces between friends. It's new territory for me lyrically, and it takes me to a really good place when I listen to it, plus I'm in awe of Samantha Crain. The song is a relaxed moment on the record, and I'm so pleased its getting its own time to shine."
Samantha Crain also commented on their collaboration:
"When Hamish sent me this song, I was absolutely floored. This is the kind of song I would have wanted to write. Such a simple subject matter but it really explores the complexity within that seemingly simple emotion. It's my favorite song I've ever gotten to collaborate on a recording of.”
Hamish's new album follows 2021's breakthrough LP "Heavy Elevator", a sublime and literate record that saw significant plaudits at both press and radio, including - no mean feat for an artist self-releasing in the current climate - three singles playlisted at BBC 6 Music. The first single from "Angel Numbers", its title track, and it's follow-up, the widescreen thrill of "Think Of Us Kissing" and most recently "Money", all followed on in that trend when they were also added to the playlist over the last year.
More recently his talent was recognised by the PRS and their PPL Momentum Fund, whose support for developing artists saw live activity across the Spring and him return to Post Electric Studio with long-time producer and collaborator, Rod Jones of Idlewild, who helped Hamish and his band to record the 11 songs that make up "Angel Numbers".
Rich of voice and even richer of imagination, Hawk creates musical pen-portraits, chamber pop songs that have swallowed both a dictionary and a compendium of modern urban (and island) fairy tales. And Hawk does all this with considerable wit, inspired by artists like Leonard Cohen, Jarvis Cocker, Randy Newman and Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields.
