Ahead of their biggest headline UK tour to date (full list below) Montreal quintet Bon Enfant share taut art-rock cut ‘Trompe L’Oeil’ - out today (19th April)
Focusing the aloof cool of Brooklyn art-rock through the colourful lens of Montreal indie (think Bodega-meets-Corridor), the stomping glam-rhythms and jubilant francophonic melodies of ‘Trompe-l’oeil’ are at once sparse, incisive and enchanting.
Taking its title from an artistic term for illusionistic three-dimensional painting, the track offers a joyous liberation of the self, or, as the band say, “what we like, what makes us feel good and is within reach. It's better to accept and satisfy ourselves as we are while respecting our own limits and limitations - and we don't need anything more.
More about Bon Enfant
Since forming in Montreal 2019 - Bon Enfant’s two albums to date - 2019’s Bon Enfant and 2021’s Diorama - have garnered wide-reaching praise across the French-speaking indie press, including multiple nominations at ‘Quebec’s Grammys’ (ADISQ Gala), such as Best Band, Best Live Show, and Best Rock Record (Which they won).
An integral cog in the ever-fertile alternative scene of Montreal, the band’s eclectic self-styled “Québécois rock” or simply, “rock québ '' serves up a menagerie of fluid, fluorescent delights. Bringing together psych-pop, glam, 70s disco, Japanese city-pop, desert rock, and more, under their ever-triumphant wing, their music, in their own words, “is best enjoyed with a flower in your hair and a sword in hand.”
Following last summer’s single ‘Aire de plastique’, ‘ ‘Trompe-l’oeil’ further teases an upcoming third album from the band, due this autumn (tbc). Signed to FMLY Booking Agency (Say Say She, Pachyman, L'Eclair), Bon Enfant embark on a comprehensive tour of the EU and The UK next month, including appearances at The Great Escape, Focus Wales and In Colours Festivals.
